Humanities

Today both 701 and 702 continued with reading The Bully Boys. We summarized Ch. 1&2 together, demonstrating how to pull out key events in chronological order. We started in point form and then changed our points into paragraph format. Students then were given vocabulary collection sheets and asked to find 4-6 words within those 2 chapters that were new to them or they felt were important to understanding those chapters. They have to define them in their own words, find examples, non-examples, and synonyms. This is homework for tomorrow!

Examples of Chapter Summaries:
701 - Chapter 1:

Thomas goes to the local store after chores at the farm. The owner of the store, Mr. McCann, goes to get supplies hidden in the back for Thomas. Two American soldiers enter the store and Thomas hides from them. Mr. McCann comes back into the store and the American soldiers confront him.

Mr. FitzGibbon, a grey-coated lieutenant, enters the store and begins to threaten the American soldiers. Thomas helps FitzGibbon knock out the soldiers and save Mr. McCann. They plan for Thomas to go with FitzGibbon to keep him and his family safe from other soldiers who will come looking for him and they get caught stealing the American soldier’s horse.

702 - Chapters 1&2:

Thomas goes to the local store to get a list of items for his family.  Mr. McCann goes to the back of the store to get the hidden items.  Two American soldiers came into the store to steal things and Thomas hides behind the shelf.  Mr. McCann comes back into the store and the American soldiers confront him. A man wearing a grey coat (Mr. FitzGibbon) rushes into the store and starts to threaten the other soldiers. Thomas grabs an axe handle and helps save everyone. Thomas took the soldier’s shoes because he did not have any.  He would need some when he left with FitzGibbon. The decision for Thomas to go with FitzGibbon for safety was made. The American soldier catches Thomas stealing his horse.

FitzGibbon and Thomas go down a road on horses. Firing his musket as a warning, FitzGibbon is being chased by American soldiers. Then, FitzGibbon knocks some American blue coats off their horses.  They have a fight before he rides off with Tommy on their horses.  FitzGibbon taunts the new soldiers that are following them. They lead the American soldiers the wrong way and make them believe there is an ambush waiting for them. Together, they sneak into the woods and they are heading towards FitzGibbon’s regiment camp.

Humanities- Week in a Glance!

Today grade 7's began a short story unit. We looked at all of the elements of a short story and plot diagram and then watched the Pixar Short film, "Lifted" to apply our new knowledge. We will continue this tomorrow. They will continue this unit for one period every day this week.

Also, 7-2 paired up with Mrs. Kingsley's 7-4 class and 7-2 paired up with Mrs. Kingsley's 7-3 class to start an Inquiry Research project. Students have found groups of no larger than 3 students between their corresponding grade 7 class and are either researching The American Revolution, The Loyalist Migration, or The War of 1812 and looking at it from the question of "how did this event help shape Canada's Identity?"

We will continue working on this research for one period every day this week. We present in the library on Monday, April 20th.
