Humanities - Thurs.Dec.11th

701 - Today we worked on practicing a Reading Strategy to monitor our understanding while reading. We looked at the differences between "Think" and "Thin" questions. A picture of this is on the blog from yesterday.

We also have Ms. Morrison, a student teacher, who will be coming in one period every day from now until Winter break. She has been reading a story about the King's Daughters in New France and working on the strategy of predicting while reading and finding the answers in the text.

702 - Today we looked at friendly letter format. Students started a task of writing a letter to someone in France as either a Habitant from New France or a King's Daughter. Students had time to brain storm today using several sources given to them for help.

Science Update

Just a reminder that there is an Interactions and Ecosystems unit test on Monday Dec 15.  There is study material on D2L.  Student should be preparing at home for this test.

Also, students have been asked to complete a water cycle activity by Monday.  It is an online activity that they will work through and use to answer questions.  The link to the activity can be found here.  Students will have to log on to this website.  The username and password are as follows
username: LA06
password: 4105
The instructions of what to do on this website are in the student exploration sheet, which as been shared to all of their Google accounts.  If students are having trouble signing onto their Google account they can get the student exploration sheet from the Gizmo page under "Lesson Materials".

Math
I would like students to use their IXL accounts to practice the skill of finding the percent of a number.    I recommend students practice until they have smart score of at least 80.

7-1 and 7-2 Science

Today in class, we discussed ecosystem monitoring. Ecosystem monitoring is a way to check the condition of an ecosystem by comparing the results of investigations done at different times. Students brainstormed the abiotic and botic elements that can be monitored. Next, students were asked categorize their elements into the 4 different types of ecosytem monitoring.

Humanities - Tues.Dec.9th

701- Today we continued working on our Reading Strategies and showing our understanding of what we read as well as how we are active readers. The structure of New France and the people within the colony was the focus topic. Here is an example of how to show your understanding of reading by using:

- Visualization                - Questioning             - Searching for Answers              - Connecting

702 - Today students worked on a new reading strategy to monitor their own understanding. We looked at how to ask good questions. Here is an example of what we did today:

Upcoming assessment

Next week on Monday (December 15) there will be a science test for both 7-1 and 7-2.  The test will be on all concepts covered in the Interactions and Ecosystems unit.  A summary of the topics and some basic review questions can be found in the science folder on D2L.

Science--December 9, 2014

Today in class we did a simulation to better understand the concept of bioaccumulation.  Please read pgs. 52-54 in the textbook and answer the following questions:

1.        What is a pollutant?

2.       How do pollutants move through the ecosystem?

3.       Explain the concept of bioaccumulation.

IXL Temporary Accounts

Math

I have been given a free account for the website IXL that I can use with students until the Christmas break.  IXL is a website that allows students to practice math concepts, get feedback, and keep a record of what they have been practicing.   I have signed all students up for an IXL account.

Their user names are firstlast141.  For example, if I were a student my account username would be juliaviola141.

Some students had a chance to choose their own passwords, if so they should know them.  If students did not have a change to pick their own password then it is just their first name with no capitals. Once they log in they can change it to whatever they want.  For example, if I were a student my password would be julia, until I changed it.

For homework this weekend I want to students to choose ONE of the skills linked to below and practice until they get a Smart Score of  at least 80.

Skill 1 Converting between fractions, decimals and percent.
Skill 2 Comparing fractions, decimals, and percent

Thurs.Dec.4 - Humanities

701 - Today we completed watch Disney's Pocahontas and discussed the importance of studying stereotypes in history. Students discussed the stereotypes shown within the movie. We also discussed how the colony of New France started out. There is no homework over the weekend. We will move into looking at European colonies next week.

702 - Today we discussed the colony of New France and created a mind map on the board of information we have learned in the past week. Students then continued to work on their reading strategy skills by looking for answers in the textbook focused on new vocabulary and reasons for colonizing. This is not homework. We will continue it on Monday.

Both classes are reminded to be returning signed assignments! Also...

There is no school tomorrow, Fri. Dec.5th, because it is a PD Day. Have a great long weekend! :)

2.  Written paragraph that explains the energy flow in the ecosystem where your owl was living.

Thursday, 20 November 2014

Humanities - Thurs. Nov. 20th

702 - Today students began writing an entry from the point of view of either A First Nations person or a European. They have brain - stormed key words, phrases and experiences from the perspective of one of these groups about the other group.

HOMEWORK - These brainstorms need to be turned into a journal entry, dairy entry, letter, from the perspective of a European or First Nations, describing their thoughts on the other group. This is due Monday, November 24th.

701 - Today students continued writing cause and effect paragraphs about how European Exploration caused the Beothuk to become extinct. Students have edited, had other students make suggestions, and sat one-on-one with a teacher for feedback.

HOMEWORK - The good copy of the paragraphs are due Monday, November 24th.  (along with the picture that was completed earlier in the week)

(Beothuk Sources Assignment - on D2L)
Science

Today in Science students completed the dissection of their owl pellet and then  identified and recorded the bones they founds on a data sheet in their notebooks.  They are know working on creating a food web or food pyramid that includes an owl and is based on the bones they found in their pellet and on research.  Finally, they are writing a paragraph that explains  the flow of energy through the owls ecosystem.  Students should think about what happens to the amount of energy that is passed on from trophic level to trophic level, the number of organisms at each trophic level and the beginning source of energy.

Homework - For homework students need to complete and submit the Topic 1-4 quiz on D2L.

Wednesday, 19 November 2014

November 19, 2014: Sceince

“Today in science class, we dissected an owl pellet and discovered many different bones.   We also discovered that an owl can eat as many as 5 rodents in half a day. We found rodents or birds inside the owl pellet with almost all of bones intact. We also found that the owl would ball up the pellet with the bones on the inside and all the hair on the outside. The class was afraid we would get diseases but we figured that they went into an incinerator type thing to disinfect them.”
