Effects of Exploration and Perspectives

These are class brainstorm notes from 701. 702 completed this last week. Please use these pictures to enhance your own notes in your journal or for quick study references!

Science

Students designed and conducted their own experiment investigating what a suitable habitat for meal worms is.  At this point students should have completed in their notebook all of the steps for conducting a scientific investigation.

Math

In math we are beginning to convert number between their fractions, decimal, and percent form.  A useful skill in this unit will be being able to create equivalent fractions.  Tonight at home students should practice making equivalent fractions using this link IXL practice.

1.  Food web or food pyramid that includes the owl and organisms from your pellet.
2.  Written paragraph that explains the energy flow in the ecosystem where your owl was living.

Humanities - Thurs. Nov. 20th

702 - Today students began writing an entry from the point of view of either A First Nations person or a European. They have brain - stormed key words, phrases and experiences from the perspective of one of these groups about the other group.

HOMEWORK - These brainstorms need to be turned into a journal entry, dairy entry, letter, from the perspective of a European or First Nations, describing their thoughts on the other group. This is due Monday, November 24th.

701 - Today students continued writing cause and effect paragraphs about how European Exploration caused the Beothuk to become extinct. Students have edited, had other students make suggestions, and sat one-on-one with a teacher for feedback.

HOMEWORK - The good copy of the paragraphs are due Monday, November 24th.  (along with the picture that was completed earlier in the week)

(Beothuk Sources Assignment - on D2L)
Science

Today in Science students completed the dissection of their owl pellet and then  identified and recorded the bones they founds on a data sheet in their notebooks.  They are know working on creating a food web or food pyramid that includes an owl and is based on the bones they found in their pellet and on research.  Finally, they are writing a paragraph that explains  the flow of energy through the owls ecosystem.  Students should think about what happens to the amount of energy that is passed on from trophic level to trophic level, the number of organisms at each trophic level and the beginning source of energy.

Homework - For homework students need to complete and submit the Topic 1-4 quiz on D2L.

November 19, 2014: Sceince

“Today in science class, we dissected an owl pellet and discovered many different bones.   We also discovered that an owl can eat as many as 5 rodents in half a day. We found rodents or birds inside the owl pellet with almost all of bones intact. We also found that the owl would ball up the pellet with the bones on the inside and all the hair on the outside. The class was afraid we would get diseases but we figured that they went into an incinerator type thing to disinfect them.”

Math 7-1

Students completed a self assessment on the outcomes we have covered so far in the Operations with Decimal units.  They have brought it home tonight to share with parents and get signed.  There are 3 assignments from this unit that they should be sharing with parents also.  The unit test for Operations with Decimals is on Tuesday.

Thurs. Nov. 13th - Humanities

702 -  We have been working on Primary and Secondary sources. Students have read about an Aboriginal tribe, the Beothuk, who are now extinct as a result of European Exploration. Students have recreated a "photograph" of what happened during contact between the Europeans and Beothuk (primary source). Today we worked on editing our secondary source (an explanatory paragraph about their photograph).

Homework -  Both the primary and secondary sources are due on TUES. NOV. 18TH.

701 -  Students have been doing work on understanding and identifying Primary and Secondary sources. Yesterday this class began working on the primary source about the Beothuk (see 702 blog above). Today, students continued this work and started working on the writing about their photograph.

Homework -  The primary source (picture) is due on TUES. NOV. 18TH
